Surfer Fergal Smith is an environmentalist who grew up on an organic farm outside Westport in County Mayo, Ireland. He now lives in County Clare and regularly surfs the western Irish coastline. He’s alsosponsored by the cold water clothing brand Finisterre.
As well as surfing, Fergal is the founder of Moy Hill Community Garden and Growing Farm in Lahinch. The farm is a non-profit operation which grows native and organic fruit and vegetables. They use heavy draught horses to plough the soil, pigs to rotovate it and seaweed brought from the local beaches for fertiliser.
In addition to helping the community farm he is also running as a candidate for the green party, more info on that on magicseaweed here.
There is an event on at Spoke & Stringer surf shop this Wednesday (27th Jan 19:00 – 21:00) giving an insight into Fergals world. It is free to register and looks like it will be an interesting event if you’re in the Bristol area. Register for tickets here. More info on Fergal and his blog posts here.
Until then here’s a video on him:
